Work Related Stress And Your Health - Does It Matter??
Recent medical reports have shown that approximately 90% of all doctor office visits are directly or indirectly caused by stress.
How does stress cause a life threatening heart attack? Will you be at risk for an early grave??
The estimated annual costs of stress for the United States as a whole range from $200-$300 billion. The impact to employers
includes decreased performance, productivity and quality, more accidents and injuries, increased health care costs and higher
levels of absenteeism and turnover. - (DeFrank and Ivancevich 1998)
Workers who feel they have little control over their jobs have higher levels of fibrinogen, which has been linked to heart attacks.
Back in 1996, Newsbrief reported on a 14-year study that found having some control over work hours meant less risk of a fatal heart
attack. The new study, by a group of Belgian researchers, points to a possible reason why. They asked 892 male workers with no
heart problems about three kinds of job stress--psychological, job control and social support. They then took a closer look at those
with job stress, looking for certain laboratory markers of inflammation. The perception of low control caused a kind of stress that
specifically increased plasma fibrinogen, a blood clotting factor that has previously been linked to heart attacks and is a key
indicator of inflammation. (# 20518 NEWSWISE, 9-19-05)
